A Life Well Lived

My sincere apologies for not posting lately. You see, our family recently lost our patriarch, my dear precious father. He passed on quite suddenly and unexpectedly. We have all had to adjust to a new reality of life.

My father was an amazing man. I would not be the person I am today without his guidance and influence. He taught us what was most important in life: our personal relationship with God. We are all better for having known him. I am confident that I will see him again in Heaven one day.

A celebration of his life was held at our church and I found the service to be tremendously healing. The setting was perfect-our old church's majestic sanctuary. The beautiful stained glass windows, the choir, the pipe organ and the bagpipes were a fitting tribute to a wonderful, multi-faceted man.

I would like to share with you a few words that were shared at his memorial service. I hope you find them as uplifting and assuring as I do.

"This service of resurrection is a declaration of our faith in the living God, whom we have come to know in Jesus Christ.

On the occasion of the passing of (my father), we gather to worship God who raised Jesus Christ from death

and made resurrection the true mark of our future.

We have come as people of God to express our love for (my father) and to share our faith and hope in that life which is God's gift to us.

In celebrating God's love and the passing of this life, we readily confess our sorrow and our difficulty in always accepting death as a natural part of life. However, we dare to look beyond our sorrow to claim a deep joy in knowing that there is nothing in life or death that can separate us, and those we love, from the love of God which is ours through Jesus Christ our Lord."

It's official!

The Prince of Wales is delighted to announce the engagement of Prince William to Miss Catherine Middleton.
The wedding will take place in the Spring or Summer of 2011, in London. Further details about the wedding day will be announced in due course.
Prince William and Miss Middleton became engaged in October during a private holiday in Kenya. Prince William has informed The Queen and other close members of his family. Prince William has also sought the permission of Miss Middleton’s father.
Following the marriage, the couple will live in north Wales, where Prince William will continue to serve with the Royal Air Force.

I absolutely hate confrontation. I want to surround myself with beauty, peace and love BUT, sometimes you have to reach into your heart and think about the unpleasant.

We MUST remember the evil and horror of what happened September 11, 2001.

Sometime You Need a Treat

Every now and then, you need a treat.

It can come in many different forms from simple to dramatic.

Personally, I like a good hotel getaway.

A relaxing hotel stay can be like going to the spa.

My most recent "treat" was at the St. Regis.

Isn't this a lovely way to dress a passageway?

The main lobby is a mixture of what I'd call modern French.

Here are some detailed photographs that I took.

The bathroom fixtures that I noticed were Kohler and Kallista (basically the same company).

I thought this was a cleaver idea: sliding mirrored French doors.

The doors opened to connect the bedroom to the bathroom.

The construction was quite simple, operating like barn doors.

Notice how the hardware is hidden under the molding.

The lighting was a modern traditional mix- all chrome/nickel and crystal.

Two more nice touches to the bath: a hidden television behind one of the mirrors,

and an environmentally friendly dual flush toilet.

So what kind of "treats" do you like?

Southern Accents Magazine to Return?

A little birdie told me yesterday that Southern Accents Magazine is being "courted" by another magazine publishing company.

I would be thrilled to see it back in print.

I'll admit though, I would have high expectations for it's revival. I certainly understand that change is all part of growing and progress, but some things just need to stay the same. Do you agree?

could a corporation that is based in the north really understand The South?

Would a mixed marriage work?

One stipulation that I would have is that the editorial staff be based in The South.

(If you don't know the humidity, haven't smelled the magnolias and experienced the renowned hospitality, how can you write about it?)

Southerners know The South.

(How many times have we watched a movie and rolled our eyes at a horrible fake accent?)

Publishing company, prove me wrong. Show me that you "get it".

I want to make sure that I have not stepped on our northern friend's toes by stating that they may not "get it". I relish in our differences. That is what makes our country so unique. I adore regionality--the accents, the food, the culture.

For anyone not familiar with Southern style, please read the following excerpt from a great article that was featured in our beloved Southern Accents magazine years ago:

For whatever reason--heredity, the water, or just plain stubbornness--when I design something, while automatically keeping in mind universal laws and objective ideals, I'm afraid that "Southern thing" seems to always emerge. Call it quirky, eccentric, charming, witty, whatever it is, it seems to always be hiding in the camellia bushes. I'm not ashamed of this but rather think it gives character and depth to my work--but I will leave that final opinion to my critics. -- Ken Tate"

Skinny Green Giant Needed

A neighbor of ours recently cut down NINETEEN (yes, 19) trees in their yard. I am mourning the lush green canopy that was once there. The privacy the tress provided was perfect.

I have decided to make lemonade out of the lemons.

I am going to refurbish the formal garden at the back of our property. I need to select a "backdrop" hedge that will accompany an old stacked stone wall.

Here's the problem: I need an evergreen plant that will take part sun/part shade, grow to about 12' minimum height, BUT I need it to be narrow (or can be pruned as such).

A master gardener friend recommended the following:

osmanthus-or tea olive

The tea olive would be nice for it's white blooms and scent.

arbrovitae-Does anyone have experience with "Nigra"? This is certainly skinny, tall and evergreen.

Don't you just love the thoughts of sitting down to a delicious meal? I sure do.

How many people can't do that these days? More than you think. I was very surprised that at a local church food bank. There were church members taking advantage of the services. They used to be the ones stocking the shelves and the freezer.

I think the blogging world is pretty amazing. Want to see what a community of internet folks can do to feed America?

Everyday, the television is filled with dire reports about the current economic climate and many use the blogging community to take a break from the constant bad news. However, we can not ignore the fact that friends, and even some blogger friends, have lost their jobs because of the recession.

People who never had a worry in the world now have to think about where their next meal is coming from. People who never would have dreamt that they would need help are now showing up at the local food banks. There is not enough food being donated to meet the rise in demand. There is not enough money to buy the food for the food banks.

Today I can complain because the weather is rainy or I can be thankful that the grass is getting watered for free.

Today I can feel sad that I don't have more money or I can be glad that my finances encourage me to plan my purchases wisely and guide me away from waste.

Today I can grumble about my health or I can rejoice that I am alive.

Today I can lament over all that my parents didn't give me when I was growing up or I can feel grateful that they allowed me to be born.

Today I can cry because roses have thorns or I can celebrate that thorns have roses.

Today I can mourn my lack of friends or I can excitedly embark upon a quest to discover new relationships.

Today I can whine because I have to go to work or I can shout for joy because I have a job to do.

Today I can complain because I have to go to school or eagerly open my mind and fill it with rich new tidbits of knowledge.

Today I can murmur dejectedly because I have to do housework or I can feel honored because the Lord has provided shelter for my mind, body and soul.

Today stretches ahead of me, waiting to be shaped. And here I am, the sculptor who gets to do the shaping.

Mirror, Mirror on the wall?

Mirrors are an amazing thing. They can be absolutely beautiful or absolutely tacky. It's all in the placement. Don't you think?

I can certainly think of applications where mirror is a very bad idea.

I am so sorry to tell you all that EKW passed away this morning.

Her little body had been through so much.

Her struggle was like a roller coaster ride. She was an incredible fighter.

I thank God for the three and a half years she was on earth.

Now is the time that our faith must really sustain us.

It's only natural for us to question, "Why did this happen to her?"

I don't know why, but I do know who is holding EKW in His arms right now.

Please pray for her parents and extended family.

I can only imagine the sense of loss they feel.

I don't think that it would be a surprise to any of you that I believe in God. He sustains me and gives me strength.

I believe in prayer.

I know of a family that needs your prayers right now. A little girl, E.K.W., has been hospitalized in intensive care for a week now. She's three years old and was running around like a typical toddler two weeks ago. She had been recovering from a stomach bug when her breathing became quite difficult and was air lifted to the children's hospital. She is in very poor condition. Her life is touch and go.

I'd like to ask you to pray for the little girl and her family. They need what only God can provide them.

If you don't know where to start, try this prayer that Jesus taught, as recorded in Matthew 6:9-13:

The Lord's Prayer

Our Father who art in Heaven,

hallowed be thy name.

Thy kingdom come.

Thy will be done

on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread,

and forgive us our trespasses (sins),

as we forgive those who trespass against us,

and lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom,

and the power, and the glory,

for ever and ever.

Amen.

Here's a more contemporary translation:

"What used to matter doesn't matter anymore. I can't explain what you feel when you see your child this way and you are helpless, but I know God is with us. I will never question Him. Again she beat the odds. I believe He is giving her strength that not many ever acquire. He has a purpose for her, a destiny..it is evident in this battle for her life. 'The battle is mine saith the Lord' and I am awaiting His victory."

UPDATE:

EKW has undergone two surgeries since my original posting. She is still in intensive care, but in stable condition. She is under the watchful eyes of four nurses all the time. (I like to think of them as two angels at her head and two at her feet!) Only family members are allowed to see her and only two at a time. I think that her healing and recovery may take a very long time. Your continued prayers are so very appreciated.

AND ANOTHER UPDATE:

From her mommy, "Good news today..lungs look great we are pulling slowly off ECMO. Please pray for 100% recovery...all vital organs restored tomorrow as they attempt to pull her off of chemical paralysis...Strong heart and mind. God, He has been so good to us! Mom needs strength tomorrow. The awake and suffering really gets to me even when God is carrying us."

Dearest blog friends, can you help me?

I really like these two images and haven't a clue

as to whom the designers or photographers were?

Please help me identify them so that I may give them proper credit for their amazing work.

If I recall correctly the top image was on the cover of Southern Accents several years ago.

Anyone have a back issue that can look this up?

(Things that Inspire, I'm counting on you for this one--there are intaglios!)

Now, the twin beds with the bookcase--how great is that! I know several of you have featured this on your blogs, but for the life of me, I can't remember who did this work.

(Oh, and for those interested: The brunch was wonderful. We had sausage and egg quiche, cream cheese danish, pineapple, honeydew, strawberries, grapes, shrimp and grits, pumpkin bread, assorted juices including tomato, orange, and pomegranate--and of course hot, hot coffee! I'm so sorry I didn't take one picture. I did good just to have the table set. Wish you could have seen it. I used china from the late 1800's, etched crystal, old sterling flatware and white linen. I broke a coffee cup. Boo. Oh, well. I say USE IT! What good is it sitting in a cabinet or drawer?)

The Royal Abbey

Several of you were exactly right! I was inside the glorious Westminster Abbey! More specifically, I sat in the choir stalls for a service (see photo below). It was absolutely beautiful. What a glorious place to worship!

Westminster Abbey is steeped in more than a thousand years of history. Benedictine monks first came to this site in the middle of the tenth century, establishing a tradition of daily worship which continues to this day.

The Abbey has been the coronation church since 1066 and is the final resting place of seventeen monarchs.

The present church, begun by Henry III in 1245, is one of the most important Gothic buildings in the country, with the medieval shrine of an Anglo-Saxon saint still at its heart.

A treasure house of paintings, stained glass, pavements, textiles and other artefacts, Westminster Abbey is also the place where some of the most significant people in the nation's history are buried or commemorated. Taken as a whole the tombs and memorials comprise the most significant single collection of monumental sculpture anywhere in the United Kingdom.

The Library and Muniment Room houses the important (and growing) collections of archives, printed books and manuscripts belonging to the Dean and Chapter of Westminster, providing a centre for their study and for research into all aspects of the Abbey's long and varied history.

Friends, this truly is the most wonderful time of year. Each year, I struggle with how to decorate. Do I keep things simple? I think of how humble the very first Christmas must have been. My mind then thinks, "Wait a minute, we are celebrating the birth of the King of Kings!"

Seriously, sometimes I do good just to have a tree and a wreath on the door.

In my heart, I long for "lush and over-the-top".

I want my home and life to reflect the LOVE that was given to ALL OF US so many years ago

Hot Tips!

All too often, we feel like we have to be "nice and polite" to everyone. Unfortunately, for our own safety, we just can't. (Southern gals: you know what I'm talking about!) Have you ever seen someone creepy in the elevator at the mall? Guess what, you don't have to get in!

I had the absolute pleasure of hearing a police detective speak at a lecture on personal safety. The 22-year veteran of police work gave so many helpful tips.

Please take the time to read all of these. They might keep you or a loved one safe. Feel free to email this list as well. (Send them a link, or cut and paste)

(All photos found on Google Images. Obviously, I chose some of them just so you could have a few giggles while dealing with such serious subject matter.)

1. Look under the car before approaching the vehicle. Also, take notice of what types of vehicles are parked on either side. Vans and SUV's are used most in abductions.

2. Don't go to your car if you see a male sitting in the passenger seat of cars on either side of you.

3. Don't place your purse or wallet in the shopping cart buggy.

4. Strap your children into their car seats AFTER you have entered and LOCKED the car doors. Do this even if it means you have to lean over the seats to do so.

5. Follow your instincts. If you feel funny about a situation, pay attention.

YOU are trying to tell YOU something.

6. Avoid carrying a purse. Instead, put your credit card, keys, cell phone in your front pockets.

7. If you do carry a purse, carry it on your shoulder, securing it under your arm. Don't carry the purse with the strap across you body.

8. Also, don't have children carry their backpacks as they are designed with both arms through the straps. Only carry it on one shoulder. Otherwise a child can be snatched by the handle on the pack or by the pack itself.

9. Carry a small flashlight and knife in your pocket. You'd find it very helpful if you were in a trunk!

10. If someone is in a car and ask you a question/gets your attention, DO NOT approach their car.

11. Go small with everything. Keep your valuables to a minimum. Think money clip.

12. Don't put anything into your purse that you want to keep. When it's gone, it's gone.

13. Travel in pair or larger groups.

14. Females: don't go out alone at night. Period.

15. The worst criminals are the BEST con artist.

16. While jogging, don't wear headphones or earbuds. You've disabled one of your senses that could keep you safe. How would you hear someone approaching you from behind? Take your dog--the bigger the better!

17. Keep what is precious close to you. Never let children out of your reach.

18. Scream and yell. The panic button on your car might help, but so many people just ignore car and house alarms.

19. Know where you parked. Don't use the remote to light up your car--and unlock it. Someone who's been watching you may be waiting for just this moment. What if they get to the car before you do?

20. Don't hesitate to call 911. They are there to help. It is easier to prevent a crime than to solve one.

21. Go to public restrooms in pairs or groups. (Also good advice for younger boys too.)

22. Wear a one piece swimsuit to the beach.

23. If a person is "checking you out" for more than 5 seconds, watch out. They are truly sizing you up. If you feel threatened-KEEP EYE CONTACT. They will know you can identify them and that you are not a submissive victim.

24. Have your keys in your hand when in the parking lot. A long key can serve as a stabbing tool if necessary.

25. Have a buddy over for coffee when you have a service person inside your home.

26. You don't have to open your door to anyone. If you haven't called the cable company, power company, etc., be suspicious!

27. Don't allow a stranger into a 6' radius of you or your children. Keep your distance.

28. Wear shoes you can run in when you go shopping or out on the town--no Manolos girls!

Use your God-given common sense.

BE AWARE OF YOUR SURROUNDINGS.

If something doesn't seem right, it probably isn't!

Last year I toured this house and was amazed that so much style could be packed into such a small home. The house was built in the 1920's and does retain much of it's original character, despite it's cutting-edge styling.

To the left of the main living room you'll find the dining room.

How I wish I could be this "edited".

O.K., no, not really. I like all of my stuff.

How do you like the chandelier? I know most of you have seen light fixtures similar to this one, but as I recall, this is real wax that has been electrified.

Now, look at the kitchen below, who would have thought of using that sconce in the kitchen?

I think it's the touches like that which truly set this interior apart.

Also, notice the metal windows with the great muttons and mullions in the "x" pattern.

Here's another thing: this house is DECORATED for Christmas!

Imagine the restraint one must have!

I adore the wreaths and paperwhites being forced.

The master bedroom above.

Quiet and simple--words I would use to describe the entire house.

I don't think there is one of us who wouldn't love to soak in this tub.

Isn't the marble wonderful?

Subtle muted tones and classic timeless furnishings--this is my kind of house.

I wish I had the time to blog and dissect a photo like Joni,

but alas, time does not allow.

Just admire the quite details in this house.

The stairs are absolutely beautiful.

The mirror, the chandelier...

A peek of the kitchen.

Functional and simple, and quite elegant. I think it is truly the lack of "fluff" that makes this kitchen so relaxing. What do you think? Any other kitchen minimalist out there?

Just the right amount of pattern and texture to keep our interest.

This room would be the fall and winter retreat. I wonder if I would be as drawn to it in the spring? Do you search for the sunlight and brighter interiors?

Clean and not fussy. The mirrors give us all that we need.

A little goes a long way.

The marble countertops are an added lovely.

The ogee edge detail makes it for me.

My one hang-up here is the finish on the cabinetry. I think I would have preferred something more simple--like the kitchen cabinets.

I'm dreaming big. I keep thinking about what may pop out of the ground in the spring.

I always like to have a bit of humor when I hear of sad news. Just something to lighten the mood--a little racy skit with gobs of humor. Enjoy.

This is the Charleston garden of the late Emily Whaley. Isn't it perfect?

If you haven't had the pleasure of reading Mrs. Whaley's two books, go get them now. She reminds me so much of my grandmother.

Also, thank you all for your well wishes. I am feeling much, much better. A late summer flu is just no fun. Fortunately, I was able to get away to the country for the holiday--and the breathing room was just what I needed.

Rest & Rejuvenation

Have you ever noticed your bed seems to feel it's best in the morning,

when you have to get up?

That was certainly the case with me this morning.

I have had contractors in the house for two weeks now. I am so tired of it, but

I keep reminding myself that the more they are here, the more progress is made.

We have had electricians, plumbers, and landscapers this week. Sounds like a new house, doesn't it? It's not. It's old, just needing a little sprucing up.

The antiqued marble in the kitchen is wonderful. I adore the way it looks and feels. Unlike honed, "antiqued" has a bit of texture. I think I have finally found a countertop with warmth--even though it's rather light in shade. Once I can clear the tops of all the boxes and clutter, I'll have to show you a picture.

Until I can show you a picture of my kitchen, let me leave you with one amazing designer, Tammy Connor. She's definitely got calm, cool style.

Southern Accents is no longer going to be published.

The announcement was made yesterday that the September/October issue would be the last.

Scarry to think that I have copies that are almost this old. The magazine began in 1977.

Honestly, where will we turn now for great Southern interiors?

In a way, it's a "greener" kitchen because of the stone selection. By choosing a regional stone, not only am I supporting a local industry, but also reducing the consumption of fuels used in transportation. Don't you think we should all try buy local?

Here's the exact slab that we will have cut. It has an antiqued finish. It has a bit more tooth than honed and no shine at all.

We've had honed granite in another kitchen for almost 10 years. We've loved it. It shows nothing and truly seems indestructible. I say all of this because I've gotten used to basically not caring for it, other than routine cleaning. So, I was a bit concerned about selecting marble.

I did my research and decided to do an experiment on a honed sample slab. I sealed half of it with a stone impregnator. I put coffee, water, cooking oil, cranberry juice, and lemon juice on it.

On the unsealed side, the oil, cranberry and lemon were the worst.
The oil soaked in and appears deep. The cranberry and lemon etched
the surface, causing it to appear more matte than before.

On the sealed side, the lemon and cranberry were still problems. The lemon was the worst. Anything with acid will cause etching. It certainly appears that stains can be avoided by using a good impregnating sealer. Etching on the other hand, will happen with acids even on a honed marble--therefore, I chose the antiqued finish.

Have you ever had to say good bye to one of your closest friends? I had to this last week.

Our precious chocolate labrador passed on. He was just shy of thirteen years old. Do you remember my discussing him before? I give thanks for his long life.

The final week of his life was agonizing for all of us. We struggled with the many decisions that needed to be made for his care, and ultimately his passing.

My heartfelt sympathy goes out to any of you who are dealing with or have dealt with the death of a pet.

It is so very strange to not have that constant presence in my life anymore.

Two things that helped me in dealing with all of this were:

"To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven." Ecclesiastes 3:1

"To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord."

2 Corinthians 5:8

I hope he is bounding through the Heavenly fields now.

Marble, granite, butcher block, teak, walnut, soapstone...

I have made pro/con list. I've done my research.

Granite seems to be the most indestructible.

(I've got honed granite now. I couldn't hurt it if I tried.)

Marble seems to be the most luxurious, but it scratches, stains and pits--boo.

Soapstone has to be oiled, wood has to be oiled.

Here's another swoon-worthy bathroom. Isn't it just lovely?

Notice something missing? Yes, the tub.

Is this a design trend, or do people just not take a tub bath the way they used to?

I wish I had documentation about the source of the above photo. Anyone out there know?

I'd love to see more of this room. Could the tub be located elsewhere?

What I really admire is the "jewel box" idea behind it. The designer has taken a relatively average sized bathroom and turned it into something luxurious.

I certainly don't think I'd miss the soaking in this bathroom.

I think the steam shower would be just fine.

Now, another bathroom, could be a powder room/half bath.

What great decorative storage the baskets provide.

Unfortunately, I don't know the source of this photo either.

I'm wondering if this is a bathroom that once had a tub.

It could have been removed and these shelves put in it's place.

I've seen a bathroom recently that did almost the exact same thing. Imagine the above bath with only the top shelf. It was used as an office, of all things.

The top shelf served as a great desktop.

Just think, if the bathroom had a separate shower, the "desk" area could serve as a vanity/make-up area.

Do any of you remember the Christopher Lowell project that converted a tub into a sofa? It was quite creative. He took a standard built-in tub and had plywood upholstered to fit over the top. The apron of the tub as skirted. Quite interesting.

Here's another use for the bathtub. How about converting a claw foot tub into a settee. I don't think so. It if works for you, contact www.reestore.com.

It's better than have it rest in a landfill.

Did you notice the construction of the sinks in the first photo?

They are entirely constructed of marble. How luxurious!

What about the toilet seat in the second photo?

It looks like the mahogany seat that Waterworks carries.

Dreamy English Garden

When I daydream of an English garden, this is one image that comes to mind. This is actually just outside of Chicago, IL. Another pleasing surprise is that the lot only measures 80' by 100'. Apparently, good things do come in small packages!

What a quaint flagstone patio-the herbs, the maple and ivy.

A lovely spring morning to all of you.

This past weekend I saw a number of real estate signs in yards of homes in our town.

(This interior must have been inspired by the main lobby at The Cloister on Sea Island.

Anyone care to join me for a leisurely chat in this room? This sofa is so inviting.

Doesn't this sitting area look so comfortable and inviting? Wouldn't you know it--it is in the home of Oprah's hair stylist--and now designer/decorator.

The entire grouping is put together quite well, in my opinion. Although, I like things to be a bit calmer--no wallpaper or fringed sofa apron. I do think that overall, for a new installation, the room appears "collected" as if it had been assembled over time.

Is this a room for you? Do you want or have a "gallery" wall--or is that too busy for your taste?
